Winter at Oak Mountain

Beyond Alpine Skiing

When winter arrives and the Speculator region becomes covered in a white blanket of snow, Oak Mountain turns into a winter playground. While most people travel to Oak Mountain for the family friendly atmosphere and powder runs, there is much more to be explored.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is free at Oak Mountain. Visitors just need to sign into the base lodge before 2 p.m. This gives staff adequate time to sweep the trails at the end of the day. Oak Mountain does not offer snowshoe rentals so you are encouraged to bring your own, or check out the recently opened store ADK Supply Co. in Speculator for snowshoe rentals.

The summit snowshoe trail is the perfect trail for all levels of snowshoers. It is 3.2 miles round trip and provides amazing views. After signing in at the base lodge, head to the top of the Bunny Hill and up Crosscut ski trail for 20 feet and then veer left onto the snowshoe trail in the woods. When you are walking up the Bunny Hill and Crosscut ski trail please stay on the left to avoid skiers. When you head into the woods, you will see there are blue markers labeling the snowshoe trail the whole way. You will emerge at the summit, where you can take in the gorgeous view!

The view from the summit, or top of the snowshoe trail.

Fat tire biking is allowed on this snowshoe trail, if the trail is packed enough to bike on. While snowshoeing you will cross the snowmobile trail four different times. Please be careful and listen for snowmobilers coming down the trail.

Tubing

You can’t visit Oak Mountain without racing a family member or friend down the tubing hill. Adults and children both enjoy the tubing at Oak Mountain. Hop in the tube at the top and glide to the bottom, then enjoy the lift ride back to the top. There is no experience or special equipment needed, however children must be 36” tall and be able to ride the tube alone. Tubing is the perfect family-friendly activity if you're looking to extend your stay in the Speculator area at Oak Mountain.

Dining

One of the best restaurants in the area sits in the lodge at the base of Oak Mountain. After a day of skiing, tubing, or snowshoeing, there is no better place to warm up with a hot meal and cold beverage than in the lodge at The Acorn Pub & Eatery. The Acorn Pub & Eatery has something for everyone on their menu, with a full bar and plenty of craft beers on tap. Check out the different events held here, and keep your eye out on their Facebook night for MexEcono night, a very popular night at the Acorn Pub & Eatery.

Traveling around the Speculator area on your snowmobile? Don’t miss the trails that lead you to Oak Mountain. Make the Acorn Pub & Eatery one of your stops for lunch or dinner, or park the sleds for a bit and stretch your legs on snowshoes, skis, or the tubing hill.

Extend your stay at Oak Mountain to experience all the recreation they have to offer. Even if the whole family doesn’t ski, there is something for everyone to enjoy during the winter months. Find a place to stay, and enjoy a family vacation in the Speculator region.
